SP1 for Vista is finally ready for download. Microsoft is already delivering the big Vista update over the automatic update function.

In fact, Microsoft had already completed SP1for Vista by the beginning of February, but it was only intended for selected groups. But now it is ready. Starting now, anybody who wants to can download SP1 in both 32-bit and 64-bit installations from Microsoft's Download Center.

What is available is the initial "Wave 0" version of SP1, which is only in the English, German, Spanish, and French languages. A second variant, known as "Wave 1", which will update Vista in all of its other language versions will be released at a later time -- the exact date is not yet clear. The installation packets update all versions of Vista from Starter to Ultimate. The 32-bit variant is 434 MB and the x64 packet is 726 MB.

The Windows update function, on the other hand, downloads a significantly leaner version, which only contains data for the version and language installed on the system; depending on how current the updates for the existing installation are, the download should be around 70 MB. Installing SP1 can take several hours and requires, at least temporarily, several GB of free space on the hard drive.

SP1 does not perform any fundamental upgrades, but rather it mainly fixes faults and problems. Once the update is complete, Vista is supposed to be faster at copying and unpacking files and the user account manager will not require so many confirmations. Microsoft provides an overview of the updates in Service Pack 1 in a white paper.

The reason for Microsoft's delay in releasing SP1 for download was, among other things, that it wanted to give hardware and software vendors time to make their products compatible with SP1 and to work out any errors, which in some cases was desperately needed. Microsoft had to concede, for example, that certain drivers prevented SP1 from being installed -- specifically, it was the setup programs for the drivers which began running during the SP1 installation. Microsoft has not revealed yet which drivers were affected, so it is not clear if the problem is been corrected yet. Certain applications also cause problems, but Microsoft has already released a list of these.

Once visited, these sites direct users to hxxp://www.get-messenger.com, a site for Get Messenger. It is a tool capable of logging into MSN Messenger servers as a regular instant messaging (IM) client. It authenticates users using the user account and password, retrieves his or her contact list, analyses it and shows which contacts removed the user from the contact list.

Definition: A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computer terminals on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Messenger-Tips does not send copies of itself, it does not work without user intervention and it does not harm the network or any computer. Messenger-Tips is not a worm.

However, the authentication method in delivering the account credentials, such as the users name and password, is not secure. Using Follow TCP Stream, an ethereal packet capture tool, Trend Micro PC-Cillin Internet Security 2007 able to capture an instance when a user name and password are being sent to the program server. Downloading multiple videos simultaneously
The Download & Recording Manager can queue multiple videos simultaneously. So while one video is downloading, you can add more videos from one or more web pages. They can download in the backgroundWhen a process is set to run "in the background" there is often no visual cue to alert you that something is happening. During a background process, you can continue to work normally. while do others things within RealPlayer or elsewhere on your computer.

Exception to simultaneous downloading
Although the Download & Recording Manager will allow several downloads in the queue simultaneously, transcodingThe process of converting a media file or object from one format to another. Transcoding is often used to convert video formats (e.g., Beta to VHS, VHS to QuickTime, QuickTime to MPEG). When necessary, RealPlayer transcodes files to RealMedia creates an exception. The Download & Recording Manager allows only a single transcode in at any one time. Starting a new download that requires transcoding will cause an existing transcode to stop (if it is a live stream) or pause (if it is on-demand).

More about transcoding
Audio and video media come is a wide variety of file types, as seen in file name extensions such as .WMV, .AVI, and so on. In order to download and record different file types, RealPlayer may transcode a media file — meaning that it digitally converts the file from one type to another. Transcoding is a common means of communicating files in media technology.

For example, RealPlayer transcodes — converts — WMV and QuickTime videos to RealVideo during the recording process.

With live streaming media, RealPlayer always transcodes the live stream in real time. On-demand media files may be transcoded or else maintained in their native format, depending on the file type involved.

Files that are transcoded will appear in My Library with the extension .IVR (Internet Video Recording). This extension is the same for audio or video file types.

You can adjust transcode preferences at Tools > Preferences > Download and Recording. Clicking Advanced Settings opens a dialog where you can:

select the default recording time for live webcasts.
adjust the conversion (transcoding) quality of videos you download.

My Library
RealPlayer saves the videos to My Library under "Downloads & Recordings." (To change this default location, open Preferences: Download and Recording.)

Good to Know
As with any Internet activity, download speed depends on a number of factors, such the video clip’s size, the speed of your Internet connection, and so on. But typically an entire video will download to My Library faster that the video’s duration.
